I began doodling from an early age, inspired by 80's and 90's cartoons such as Thundercats and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. I was also heavily influenced by games such as Super Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog.
I first tried drawing Digitally on an Amiga 500+ using Deluxe Paint 3. I spent hours as a kid, drawing and animating using the various pixelated brushes and animation tools.
After graduating school, I pursued drawing as a career. I was either going to become an artist or Palaeontologist (but my maths and Science is terrible, so art made more sense).
I studied Art and Design at Harrogate College followed by completed a Degree in Multi Media Technology at Leeds Met.
Fast forward to 2014, I now work as an illustrator, specialising in children's books. I’m represented by the lovely folk at The Bright Agency.
I really enjoy illustrating stories and love themes such as Pirates, monsters, haunted houses and Dinosaurs! I love painting in Photoshop adding details, playing with colour and having fun with characters and expressions.
I create my artwork digitally using a Wacom Cintiq 24HD drawing tablet and Macbook Pro.
Question 1 : Pasta or Pizza?
Pizza! You can’t go wrong with a delicious pizza! A stone baked pizza cooked in a wooden fire. Lots of different toppings (no particular favourites - I like most of them)!
Question 2 : Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars! It’s way more exciting than Star Trek for me. Lightsabers, Ewoks, AT-AT’s - all really cool. The characters and worlds are all very memorable. The battle of Hoth was fantastic - the speed bike chase in Return Of The Jedi was great - and the final space battle was pretty epic. The models they used in original trilogy were brilliant too.
Question 3 : Late night or Early morning?
Probably late night, as I’m really not the best morning person : ) It’s fun to stay up late and watch a good a film or play a enjoyable video game. It’s also good to doodle if inspiration strikes. And of course I enjoy going out with friends to have a few cheeky ales in a good pub, too.
Question 4 : Pen or Pencil?
Wacom Pen : ) I own a Wacom Cintiq and I pretty much do all my sketches, notes and final illustrations using it. It’s better for the environment and I’m less likely to chew on the end of a Wacom pen, compared to a normal pen or pencil ;)
Question 5 : Summer or Winter?
If you'd like to see more of Chris's work, why not pop over to his site - http://cargocollective.com/jevsillustration
Probably the two weeks of Summer we get every year. It makes a nice change from the rain and fog : ) It’s cool to get out and sit in a beer garden and relax with friends. It’s also great to spend a bit of time sketching outside. The sunshine makes me really want a Wacom Companion, so I can sit in the garden and illustrate with a nice cup of Yorkshire Tea.…Then of course it rains and I go back inside, so I haven’t bought a Wacom Companion. Yet… :)
