Recently I was approached to design a poster for Rugby Theatre's upcoming production of The Hound of the Baskervilles - a spoof reworking of the classic Sherlock Holmes story.
The brief was fairly straightforward - the poster should be inspired by the classic film posters of the 40s and 50s.
Starting with photos of the actors, I had to not only attempt to recreate the look of these posters but also to add in extra detail, such as the hat and suitable clothing. Another challenge was to find a way to mimic the painterly style seen in old posters. After a bit of trial and error I found that a combination of Photoshop's smudge tool and unsharp mask filter, as well as a fair amount of repainting areas that needed a bit more detail did the trick.
While this kind of work is a far cry from the type of project I usually work on, it was extremely enjoyable and a great opportunity to get my brain working in a slightly different way.
